The Center of Contemporary Art is in located in the former Mercado de Mayoristas (wholesale market) of Málaga. This historic building that was built in 1930 was a market until 1983, and in 1983 the process was initiated to declare it a Cultural Heritage Site. It opened its doors as a museum in February 2003.

The museum is devoted to educating and reflecting around Contemporary Art. A vibrant center, a dynamic and innovative place that is open to all types of international avant-garde artistic and cultural proposals.

It has a total surface of 6000 m2, out of which around 2400 are for exhibitions. The rest is devoted to conference space and other cultural events.

In just one decade it has hosted exhibits of world-class artist such as Tracey Emin, Anish Kapoor, William Kentridge, or the Chapman Brothers.

The permanent collection is constantly expanding. In addition to new acquisitions by the City Council of Málaga, the current owner of the museum, a new system of loans has been introduced by which private collectors loan their works for a specific time. Here, you can take a journey through the art movements and trends in the twentieth century, especially from the last decades, from the ’50s until our days.

Louise Bourgeois, Art & Language, Olafur Eliasson, Thomas Hirschhorn, Damian Hirst, Julian Opie, Thomas Ruff and Thomas Struth are some of the artists whose works are displayed at Málaga’s Center of Contemporary Art.
